I was only dimly aware of this one and very much appreciate the review. I cannot deny all that, but I think I read the book at the right moment, as I was researching how war narratives question gender, and more particularly masculinity.

Besides an eventual act of violence and his all-but-admitted misogyny, the most off-putting of Dawn’s actions in the story is his refusal to visit Vietnam and actually see that country that he is giving his government tactical recommendations to more effectively destroy. So Duskland must be one of the reasons for J.

This is not a bad or poorly done book, but when an author lays too much mentality and premeditation into a kid’s head I think he or she misses the point of childhood in this case boyhood by transferring the adult view into the child.
I say this of all tame Hottentots, good ones like Klawer and spoiled ones like Dikkop. Yes, that’s duslkands — I recommend this short volume otherwise without reservation — but having read his utterly amazing and fully realized novel “Disgrace,” these two stories, his first published works, show a writer not yet at the height of his powers.
It is a pretty thing to see, this confidence, for a change, for one who has moved so long among the duusklands and cowardly, though based on an illusion duskladns course, a delusion of strength, of equivalence.
